Water softeners.

If you live in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire or Buckinghamshire, you are probably already aware that the area we live in has heavy calcium deposits in the water, this is usually around the 300ppm (parts per million) region.

Water absorbs magnesium and calcium as it filters through the various minerals after rainfall, especially in areas where limestone is present, it is said to be 'hard'. Limescale is the hard, off-white, chalky deposit found in kettles, hot-water boilers and the inside of inadequately maintained hot-water central heating systems. It is also often found as a similar deposit on the inner surface of old pipes and other surfaces where "hard water" has evaporated. Other than being unsightly and harder to clean, limescale seriously impairs the operation or damages various components.

What are the benefits of softened water?

The simple answer is that soft water saves you money. There are also other benefits associated with soft water. Many sufferers of eczema, psoriasis and other problems such as dry skin say that soft water greatly improves their conditions, if it doesn't eradicate them altogether.
Limescale deposits build up on immersion heaters, in kettles, washing machines, irons, dishwashers and inside pipes and hot water cylinders. Not only will a water softener start to remove the limescale that is in your pipes and on your heating elements, but it will also prevent any further deposits in the future. Because elements that are already 'furred' up have to heat the limescale before they can heat the water, a scale free system will use less energy, saving on heating bills by as much as 70%. Just 3mm of scale increases your hot water bills by over 25%.

A water softener will also reduce the amount of time spent cleaning around areas of water usage around the house; the shower cubicle and shower head will stay cleaner for longer without that frosted layer of calcium on the surface, the bath, basin and W.C. will be cleaner for it also. The most immediately noticeable is in the reduction of washing powder used for the family clothes washing.

Soap lathers better in soft water, and you use less soap to be just as effective, if not more so. Shampoo is free to clean your hair, without the hindrance of certain trace minerals in the water, leaving your hair shinier and more manageable. These trace minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium would otherwise adhere to your skin and hair, along with some soap.

You also save considerable amounts of money on all the other cleaning products used such as surface cleaners, shower cleaners, scale removers, floor cleaners, etc. etc.
